FIND A CLINIC

THE PROBLEM
Although abortion has been legal in the United States since 1973, individual states have enacted laws and regulations that significantly restrict abortion options and access. These laws and regulations create enormous procedural and other barriers for those seeking a safe and legal abortion.
THE PROJECT
The website will use location, and current state laws to identify clinics that do not fit each woman’s specific health needs and other requirements. Research has shown that in addition to barriers such as gestational limits or mandatory waiting periods, women face secondary barriers such as travel expenses, time constraints and lost wages.
PROCESS
IDENTIFICATION PHASE
Research - As a small independent team working on a sensitive topic, it was a challenge to conduct effective primary research. My two main methods were an anonymous survey, and interviews with abortion access workers. Though it was hard at times, because abortion access is currently such a high profile public health issues, I was able to make extensive use of the extensive published research available on the subject.
ANALYSIS PHASE
Synthesis - I used affinity mapping to organize the challenges and barriers identified during my research.
Personas - While personas may not be the correct tool for every project, due to the extremely personal and emotional aspects of this project as well as my access to both qualitative and quantitative research, I decided personas would help to convey the special circumstances users face. I used research insights, national statistics and testimonials to craft personas that reflect the women we seek to help.
